Training

5 weeks to go, I'm all vaccinated and trained - the week up in Coll was brilliant and I feel prepared for everything from culture shock to basic children's rights and how to deal with scabies, ringworm, lice etc. Also we dealt with setting up clubs and extracurricular activities, to teaching young adults the importance of HIV/AIDs and interview techniques.

It was great to meet the other girls going with Project Trust to Peru:
Amy & Hannah - Arequipa
Tamara & Claire - Trujillo
Hannah & Jenny - Chiclayo
Saskia & Claire - Iquitos
Annaleise & Tyree - Pucallpa
Izzy & Allie - Piura

Unfortunately mine and Tanya's project fell through while we were there! They said they had too many French volunteers so we are now not going to Lima but Cusco. In the middle of the transitions we were possibly going to be sent to Chile or Malawi! The landscape and location of Cusco is much better - there is much more to do culturally, for example the Qoyllur Rit’i is one of the many indigenous festivals in that area throughout the year. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ae/Qoyllur_R%27Iti_panoramic_overview.jpg and http://brinkofsomethingelse.com/2010/06/qoyllur-riti-beating-drums-and-freezing-feet/ and http://enperublog.com/2008/06/23/qoyllur-riti/ We're now working with this charity http://www.azulwasi.org/ south of the old Incan capital, high in the Andean village Oropesa (literally means 'gold coin'). I need to get some Altitude sickness tablets for the height: ~3500m.

The care house has outside bathrooms, a peddle-powered washing machine and 12 boys between the ages of six and twenty. They've all been taken out of high-risk social areas (streets!) to be cared for and educated in a safe, supportive environment. Tanya and I will be sharing a dorm with two other volunteers by the looks of it, and the place has its own mini guinea pig farm(!) and greenhouse to grow food in the cold climate.

On training we also received our official leaving date: 27th August, a mere 10 days after A level results, of which I am petrified about receiving!

My next update will be from Peru, most likely Lima where we spend the first few days of the year acclimatising with the in-country representative Maria 'Pia' Portugal. Here we'll get a Peruvian phone and SIM card, plus spend time sorting our visa paperwork and registering with the embassy/high commission.

Hasta luego!
- Rachel
