The first one!!

Hello!

I am new to blogging so it feels a bit weird! Who am I talking to?! No-one yet... hopefully this will be useful while I'm away for contacting family and friends so let's give it a go!

It's January and the fundraising begins in earnest! I think previously I had hoped I could spend a week in the Cambridge Library, mail lots of trusts to... WHAM! get £4500 worth of funding and lock my mind back onto A-levels. Realistically I need to get more stuck in than that. By talking a bit more about the prospect of spending a year in the southern hemisphere I will really understand what I'm embarking upon! Argh - scary!

I find fundraising an equally daunting prospect: selling yourself and cause. Why should people give their hard-earned money to me for a year out of education or standard job? A 'gap-year' - a year many students spend working in Britain before travelling and I want money for it? I think this is what made me think "I need to fundraise myself" through organisation and sponsored events mainly. I can't dedicate time to a working job with A-levels on the go (I did try) but with lots of plans and ideas I will definitely make the target on time - it's just a matter of getting going!

So far the ideas are:
- Sponsored bike ride from Cambridge to London. I plan to complete this in a day using this route:

So that's a lot to learn before then: map reading on a bike, puncture mending, what food to take, how to get home (Would Ma&Pa offer myself and le bicycle a lift back home? Can you take bicycles on a train?)

- Dress up day at HRSFC (my sixth form college). This will hopefully bring in some more towards the target. Along with fellow Project Trust volunteers we might get the success the last Pyjama Day had; it raised around £500! Hopefully we can have a cake sale on the same day.

- Bag-packing at local supermarkets - hopefully 4 during Easter using Project Trust t-shirts with other PT volunteers.

- Finally there's definitely potential to organise something for St Valentine's Day at HRSFC so I shall get thought-showering on that one.

Just a sobering reminder of what this is all about:

One statistic which particularly caught my eye: there are approximately 57,000 orphaned children in Peru.
